📝 1. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY & STATEMENT
Ratko Torma is a self-taught contemporary figurative and surreal painter from Serbia. His artistic practice explores perception, identity, inner conflict, and the invisible structures through which individuals construct their understanding of reality.
Since 2017, Torma has been developing his ongoing series Mental Constructions, a body of more than thirty oil paintings examining the relationship between perception and reality. Through recurring motifs such as mirrors, clocks, gears, glass, cracks, numbers, money, barbed wire and cosmic imagery, his paintings explore the mechanisms—both conscious and unconscious—that shape human experience.
Rather than illustrating a predetermined narrative, Torma creates visual situations that invite viewers to question what they see and consider the possibility that reality is individually constructed through beliefs, fears, values and learned perceptions.
